Facebook to demote content with fake video play buttons

  • Facebook Rolls Out New Video Options

Have you ever click on what looks like a video in your Facebook News Feed only to discover that what you clicked was actually an image disguised as a video?

"People want to see accurate information on Facebook, and so do we", said Baraa Hamodi, an engineer at Facebook in a blog post announcing the update. Moreover, publishers who trick and mislead people into clicking on a link which contains malicious videos or content will also be dealt with as they are also earning revenue from it, damaging the revenue of those publishers who share or publish good content.

The social network faced heavy criticism in the wake of the 2016 US Presidential elections for allowing inaccurate stories to proliferate on its platform, and for creating a "bubble" that made it more hard for users to access stories outside their typical news sources or areas of interest.

The social network application only allows mid-roll ads (ads that show up in the middle of a video) on the Facebook News Feed - not pre-roll, because Facebook is built for video discovery, and people are less likely to discover new videos if there's a pre-roll ad (an ad before the video starts).

"During the coming weeks, we will begin demoting stories that feature fake video play buttons and static images disguised as videos".

Facebook has announced that in order to promote "authentic content", its algorithms will now target and remove video clickbait from the News Feed. This often confuses people as to why the video isn't playing, but the spammer gain outs of it by still managing a website click. Most Pages won't see significant changes to their distribution in News Feed.

This time the target is clickbait videos.

With this development, TheNewsGuru reports, Publishers that rely on these intentionally deceptive practices should expect the distribution of those clickbait stories to markedly decrease.
