Two Magazine Covers Drop The Mic On Trump's Charlottesville Response

  • The Economist's latest cover depicts Trump shouting through a megaphone shaped like a KKK hood

The New Yorker on Thursday unveiled its latest cover illustration featuring the president blowing into the sail of a KKK hood.

The move is a form of protest against Trump's widely criticized response to violence caused by white nationalists in Charlottesville, Va., over the weekend that left one person dead and dozens wounded.

The president said there were "very fine people on both sides" of violent demonstrations in which a white nationalist allegedly killed civil rights activist Heather Heyer when his auto ploughed into a crowd in the Virginian city. The billowing white canvas has two holes in its centre, conjuring the image of a Klansman's hood.

The scathing covers follows similar denunciations from the New York Post and the Daily News earlier this week.

"President Trump's weak pushback to hate groups - as if he was trying not to alienate them as voters - compelled me to take up my pen", Plunkert told the magazine.

THE COVER PAGES of both The Economist and New Yorker magazines have published covers linking Donald Trump to the Ku Klux Klan.

The Economist started it off with a story titled "Donald Trump has no grasp of what it means to be president".

A third related illustration came from Time magazine and will appear on its 28 August edition.

"These people are hiding behind the flag and the idea of patriotism it connotes", Rodriguez said. Most successful leaders, certainly most Presidents, preach an American gospel about freedom, justice, imagination, ambition", Time magazine Editor-in-Chief Nancy Gibbs explained, adding: "They invoke enduring values in the service of both achieving goals and healing wounds.
