CEOs resign from Trump Manufacturing Council

  • Frazier is one of the country’s most prominent black corporate executives and was the only black male CEO named to the council in January

Earlier this week, Merck CEO Kenneth Frasier turned his back on Trump in protest of the president's handling of white supremacist violence in Charlottesville.

Frazier, one of only a few black CEOs to helm a Fortune 500 company, said in a statement Trump "must honor our fundamental views by clearly rejecting expressions of hatred, bigotry and group supremacy".

The heads of drugmaker Merck, sports apparel giant Under Armour, tech multinational Intel, the Alliance for American Manufacturing and the largest group of unions in the U.S., the AFL-CIO, have all exited Mr Trump's council.

Musk, the first to resign, faced considerable backlash from Tesla customers for his decision to work in conjunction with the beleaguered president, citing what they saw as Trump's objectionable nature, behavior, rhetoric and proposed policies along the campaign trail.

Brian Krzanich, CEO of Intel; and Kevin Plank, founder and CEO of Under Armour.

In spring 2017 the Under Armour boss commented on Donald Trump to the TV broadcaster CNBC, and caused a nightmare in doing so.

ZARROLI: Yesterday, Plank joined the growing ranks of corporate leaders who are publicly cutting ties with Trump following his tepid statements about the Charlottesville violence this weekend.

With the council since disbanded amid mounting CEO defections, Frazier's move Monday stands as a potentially pivotal moment in a divisive presidency: the day big business decided the price of proximity to the businessman president was too high.

Musk resigned from the President's Council in June because of disagreements with the Trump administration's policy on climate change. Frazier said he was acting on a "matter of personal conscience".

Other executives, including those from General Electric and Dow, planned to stay on Trump panels, USA financial news media reported.

Frazier's statement of principle was promptly greeted by a typically juvenile yet threatening tweet from the nation's chief executive, noting that Frazier would now have "more time to LOWER RIPOFF DRUG PRICES!"

That appeared to be a reference to Trump's statement over the weekend blaming violence "on many sides" after neo-Nazis and white nationalists clashed with counter-protesters in Charlottesville. And don't get me wrong, you know, Trump was right when he accused the CEO of Merck of price gouging American consumers, they absolutely do.

"We should honour - not attack - those who have stood up for equality and other cherished American values".

Trump later denounced neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan as "criminals and thugs" on Monday amid growing pressure from political leaders on both the right and left who criticized the president for not condemning the hate groups by name. They don't want to be associated with it because they don't want to take their brand down with them just so they can sit on this stupid little council that Donald Trump has created and that's because they recognize the power of the American public.
