So Lee was arguably with the counter-protestors in spirit last weekend when they clashed with Neo-Nazis, Klansmen and other white supremacists who rallied in Charlottesville to protest the city's plans to remove the statue of the general. But he says it‚à "ôs wrong for an individual to vandalize a house of worship".

Duke officials discovered the vandalism early Thursday.

A fresh debate over Confederate symbols has roiled the U.S. since Saturday's violence during a protest by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, against the removal of a Lee statue in which one woman died.

In an email to students, faculty, staff and alumni Saturday morning, University President Vincent Price said he chose to have the statue removed to protect the chapel and its parishioners, and to "express the deep and abiding values of our university".

More arrests have been made in the U.S. over the toppling of Confederate statues as communities in the south face a contentious debate over such divisive monuments.

The removal also presents an opportunity for us to learn and heal. Eight people face charges including rioting and damaging property.

Another group of anti-Confederate protesters in Durham, North Carolina, tore down a different Confederate statue before being arrested or turning themselves into police in the days that followed, according to CBS News.

On Thursday, Duke President Vince Price said people should respect the university's process for dealing with the issue.

The Lee statue had stood for about 85 years between two other historical figures of the American South, Thomas Jefferson and poet Sidney Lanier, along the main entryway to the neo-Gothic church at the centre of Duke's campus. The decision was supported by the university's trustees, Schoenfeld said. "We haven't come as far as perhaps we thought we had come as a nation", Powery said.
