UP train derailment: What we know so far

Visuals of the incident suggest that casualties may rise further as several coaches appeared mangled over one another.

The train runs between Haridwar and Puri. Television visuals show that derailed bogies have crashed into a house.

The railways and the police summoned all equipments including heavy lift cranes and gas cutters to access the affected coaches and cut through them to bring passengers to safety.

Rescue operation is underway.

Officials said that medical teams had been rushed to the spot from Meerut, Saharanpur and other nearby districts. The team headed by DSP Anoop Singh will probe any terror angle into the rail accident. 45 member NDRF teams have also been rushed to the spot and 17 companies of PAC have also rushed to the spot.

The accident is the latest disaster to hit India's most populous state.

Arvind Kumar, 12 bogies of Haridwar bound Uttakal Express today derailed.

A 2012 government report said nearly 15,000 people were killed every year on India's railways and described the loss of life as an annual "massacre". "We are trying to take out those trapped inside the coaches".

The Railways and the UP government are "doing everything possible and providing all assistance required in the wake of the train derailment", the Prime Minister added. Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said he was personally monitoring the situation and directed senior officials to take stock of the situation and ensure speedy rescue and relief operations.

He also said that an inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident and promised strict action against any lapse. "Most of the injured have been taken to the hospital", said P S Mishra, chief medical officer for the area, by phone.

PM: In close touch with UP CM Yogi Adityanath, Suresh Prabhu says that State Government officials, district administration will coordinate rescue and relief operations.
