  • China official rebukes Bannon: 'No winner in a trade war'

Schott didn't see "any immediate restrictions" being imposed on China by the United States as the USTR has to do "a lot more study" on this case.

The only reason nothing happened yet, is that American companies that purchase steel converged on the White House team.

During the event for signing the probe order, Trump emphasized that "Washington will turn a blind eye no longer" to Beijing's "theft" of United States industrial secrets.

But Bannon is surrounded by rivals for the president's favor, clashing with top officials such as H.R. McMaster, Trump's national security adviser. "It's like, every day", Bannon said.

General McMaster has become Mr. Bannon's nemesis in the West Wing, the leader of what Mr. Bannon has described to colleagues as the "globalist empire project" - a bipartisan foreign policy consensus that emphasizes active American engagement around the world. During the presidential transition, he was spotted in an airport by a New York Times reporter carrying a copy of "The Best and the Brightest", David Halberstam's book about America's misadventure in Vietnam. It's a moment when senior Communist Party officials want to project calm confidence, shying away from fights they might not win.

"If the Trump administration continues to link North Korea's nuclear weapon and missile development issues with trade, it will make the situation more complicated", the newspaper warned.

To Mr. Bannon, all these ventures distract from his grand project of reviving American manufacturing.

The United States should instead work with China to find consensus and promote healthy trade relations, the ministry said. It said its trade ties with the United States and North Korea's nuclear program are two unrelated issues and "should not be discussed together".

According to USTR, the investigation will consider whether the Chinese government is conducting or supporting unauthorized intrusions into U.S. commercial computer networks or cyber-enabled theft of intellectual property, trade secrets, or confidential business information, and whether this conduct harms USA companies or provides competitive advantages to Chinese companies or commercial sectors.

And 86 percent of all counterfeit goods worldwide come from China and Hong Kong, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Its commerce ministry issued a statement on Tuesday expressing "serious concern" over Trump's order to investigate US-China trade ties, insisting that the government would "definitely adopt all appropriate measures to vigorously defend the lawful rights and interest of China".

Editor's Remarks: The door may be revolving in the White House, but economic nationalism is still on the agenda.

In an interview reflecting on some of his big-thinking projects, Bannon said the country should be "maniacally focused" on a confrontation with Beijing over who will be the global "hegemon" of the next 25 to 30 years.

Bannon pushed China hawks for positions throughout the federal bureaucracy but did not last long enough to oust Susan A. Thornton, the acting assistant secretary of state for Asia, as he wished. "Nice", Trump said in a sarcastic tweet published in July. "The alternative would have been both catastrophic and unacceptable!"

"Kim Jong Un of North Korea made a very wise and well reasoned decision", Mr. Trump wrote Wednesday.
