A team of scientists from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany have succeeded in recreating the environmental conditions found deep inside the icy giant orbs of the Solar System and found the formation of thousands of tiny diamonds. However, they claimed that the diamonds produced during diamond rain in Neptune and Uranus could be a whole lot bigger.
But researchers have long theorised that deep within these vast, blue planets something astonishing occurs: high temperatures and pressures act on the hydrocarbons deep in the oceans to produce diamonds that rain down, falling towards the planets' interiors.
"We can't go inside the planets and look at them, so these laboratory experiments complement satellite and telescope observations", Kraus concluded. What's more, the researchers were able to probe the structure of the material as it was made.
When the scientists blasted polystyrene plastic (which has a chemical makeup similar to that of ice giant's atmosphere) with a laser, they were able to create shockwaves that briefly formed tiny diamond crystals measured to be just a few nanometres wide.
To form their laboratory diamonds, the researchers used a powerful laser to create two shock waves in plastic. As the polystyrene is primarily a hydrocarbon polymer, it easily fell apart into its atoms of hydrogen and carbon which then are compacted and form an amazingly short moment; this simulation results in nano-diamonds to form.
"The experimental time is very short", said Dominik Krauss, first author of the research from the German research laboratory Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. While we'll never get to see diamond rain with our own eyes, we can content ourselves with the knowledge that giant diamonds are raining down on a planet not too far from our own.
"In the planet you have years, millions of years, and a long range of conditions where this actually can happen", said Gericke, adding that that would give plenty of opportunity for the diamonds to grow.
Priceless diamonds fall through the slushy interior of Neptune and Uranus and cover the solid cores of the giant planets, new research suggests. "These diamonds will sink down because they are heavier than the surrounding medium and when they sink down there will be friction with the surrounding medium, and at some point they will be stopped when they reach the core and all this generates heat".
A team of worldwide scientists from Stanford has made the most stunning and surprising discovery of the century - it has been raining diamonds on the two most mysterious planets of our solar system - Neptune and Uranus. For example, diamond rain may sound a bit loopy when one considers earth, the moon or even Mars or Venus. Using a laser instead offers a potentially more efficient and much safer method of manufacture.
