What the critics are saying about Darren Aronofsky's completely mad/genius Mother!

"There is always a level of taste regarding films", the director said of the psychological horror film that is running for the Golden Lion starring Jennifer Lawrence (his partner), Michelle Pfeiffer and Javier Bardem.

Academy attention will nearly certainly focus on Jennifer Lawrence who plays the title character, and through whose perspective - and on whose face - Aronofsky lingers throughout.

The 27-year-old actress waved to fans when she stepped off the boat en route to promote her upcoming movie, Mother!

Jennifer, 26, stars in the film which was directed by Darren, 48, and that's where their romance blossomed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy, the film is "a very Rosemary's Baby-like intimate horror tale that definitely grabs your attention and eventually soars well over the top to make the bold concluding statement that, for some creators, art is more important than life". For being one of the biggest movie stars around, Lawrence usually keeps it low-key. If so, however, he heads right for that film's in-your-face, party-with-the-devil final scene ('Hail Satan!'), which director Roman Polanski took an entire two-hour movie to work up to.

Aronofsky and Lawrence have been romantically linked since September 2016, confirming reports that they began seeing each other after the film wrapped.

"I was surrounded by shrieks, yawns, laughter, smiles and a man who yelled "fuck you" at the screen as soon as the credits started", explained Collider. It's a baroque nightmare that's about nothing but itself.

He said, "I think there is absolutely a connection". Both Lawrence and co-star Javier Bardem have Oscars already on their mantels, while supporting players Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris are beloved screen veterans who have each been nominated multiple times but have never won. Read on for more breathless reviews. See mother! if you have the stomach for it (a quick Google search reveals that it's intense).
