CBSE Gets Strict On Safety Of Children, Issues Circular To Schools

In the wake of the murder of an 8 years old school Class II student named Pradyuman Thakur at the Haryana Ryan International school, the CBSE has issued an order regarding keeping certain security measures in schools.

The report submitted by the committee to CBSE on Friday evening states that CCTVs were not functional in the school and non-teaching staff used the same toilet as school students.

North Delhi Mayor Preety Agarwal said "the circular has been issuedto all NDMC-run education institutions to follow the instructions for safety and security of students keeping in view the recent incident."

The principal of a Navodaya Vidyalaya in Meghalaya told The Telegraph that police verification of all staff was already mandatory at the time of recruitment but the psychometric test is new. Such verification and evaluation for non-teaching staff such as, bus drivers, conductors, peon and other support staff may be done very carefully and in a detailed manner. To constitute a parent-teacher-students committee to address the safety needs of the students and to take regular feedback from parents in this regard. "I trust the school to take all the safety measures, but even then, as a parent, I worry about my child's safety in and out of school", concludes Ranjana. The women lawyers also suggested some guidelines, including that there should be "no liquor vendors, hawkers, stalls selling tobacco and other such tobacco based product that is pan-masala, cigarettes, gutkas" within one kilometre radius of a school.

Blaming the school management for its failed security precautions, the CBSE said, "Had the school management deployed attendant/ayah, the mishap would have been avoided".
