The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills confirmed in a statement to press that it was dealing with a "prolonged power failure to the transformer which powered the facility's air conditioning system as a result of the hurricane".

The criminal investigation has begun by the Hollywood police, on the deaths happened in the Hollywood Hills' Rehabilitation Center, 1200 N. 35th Ave.

Three patients were found dead at the nursing home early yesterday, and three more died at the hospital after more than 100 in all were evacuated, many on stretchers or in wheelchairs, authorities said.

The victims' identities were unknown.

Police evacuated 115 residents on Wednesday from the facility, whose air conditioning was cut by the storm.

Tragedy struck a #nursing home in Florida after everyone thought that the worst was over after #Hurricane Irma passed through the state.

It's unclear whether the facility was without any power or just without air conditioning.

Police said a criminal investigation is underway and they are not ruling anything out.

The state of Florida responded by preventing the facility from admitting new patients and evacuating the rest of its residents.

Power outages also remain an issue in the Jacksonville area.

"Any time an older individual is exposed to a natural disaster like a hurricane, they end up having adverse events", said geriatrician Dr. David Dosa, "whether that is mortality, death, or hospitalizations".

Donald Trump has visited communities torn up by Hurricane Irma in Florida - handing out food to families whose homes were destroyed by the storm.

Gov. Rick Scott called on Florida emergency workers to immediately check on all nursing homes to make sure patients are safe, and he vowed to punish anyone found culpable in the deaths.

Temperatures on Tuesday in the city of Hollywood reached 32C (90F), according to the National Weather Service.

Elsewhere, a South Florida townhouse that weathered the storm was gutted by fire when power was restored, which caused the stove to ignite items left on the cooktop. "We are working with everybody", Trump said.

John Tupps, Scott's communications director, alleged that, "Every call made to the governor from facility management was referred to the Agency for Health Care Administration and the Florida Department of Health and quickly returned".
