  • FPL staged close to 17,000 workers at 20 points across the state ahead of Hurricane Irma. The workers have been working to restore power even during hurricane feeder bands

As of 8 p.m., Wednesday, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is reporting that electric service has been restored to more than 2.7 million customers impacted by Hurricane Irma in the first 48 hours since the storm left its service area.

In Georgia, about 700,000 customers - which includes households and businesses - were in the dark Tuesday, according to Georgia Power and Georgia EMC.

As weather conditions improve, restoration efforts will accelerate, but it could take an extended period of time for all customers to be restored due to the vast damage from Irma.

Power trucks and workers head out from Derby Lane, in St. Petersburg, Fla., Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, into Pinellas County to restore power after Hurricane Irma. "There are just so many cases and outages all over metro Atlanta and the state". Hollywood Police Chief Tom Sanchez said investigators believe the deaths at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills were heat-related, and added: "The building has been sealed off and we are conducting a criminal investigation". The company said it estimates it will have power restored to nearly all customers along its east coast service area by the end of the day on September 17 and for customers along the west coast by September 22.

Don't step in standing water or saturated ground where downed lines may be present.

For customers using electric generators, FPL advised residents to set them up outside, away from all open windows, to prevent deadly exhaust from entering a home.

Avoid chain link fences. If driving, move over one lane for utility vehicles stopped on the side of the road - it's the law in Georgia.

So far, the utility has seen about 5 million total customer outages, he said.

It's not just the Keys that were hard hit.

President Trump hasn't yet announced details of a trip to Florida in the aftermath of Irma, but spent most of the weekend at Camp David huddling with emergency officials and said Sunday he plans to visit "very soon". Some three weeks after Harvey, at least 10,700 customers in that state remained without power. To complete restoration as efficient and safely as possible, the company has mobilized approximately, 6,000 personnel from Georgia Power, other Southern Company operating companies and assisting utilities.

Central Georgia EMC has restored service to 92 percent of its outages since Monday. And within a day of the storm's passage, it had restored power to 40 percent of customers, including those who lost power when at-risk substations were deliberately brought down.

A message on Florida Power and Light's website said the following: "We're experiencing widespread outages and there is no need to report your outage at this time".

About 1,000 employees and contractors from Exelon Corp.'s six electric utilities-Atlantic City Electric, BGE, ComEd, Delmarva Power, PEC and Pepco-went to Florida and Georgia.
