The end result is a humanitarian crisis, with many of Myanmar's Muslims fleeing to Bangladesh as authorities burn down Rohinyga villages.

Aung San Suu Kyi's spokesman has said she will not attend next week's annual meeting of world leaders at the United Nations, where the plight of the Rohingya will be in the spotlight.

The United Nations appealed Thursday for massive help for the almost 400,000 who fled to Bangladesh, amid concern the number could keep rising unless Myanmar ends what critics denounce as "ethnic cleansing".

Replying a question about his views what is taking place in Myanmar and Bangladesh, and the behavior of Aung San Suu Kyi, Tillerson said this violence must stop; this persecution must stop.

U.S. State Secretary Rex Tillerson arrives for a courtesy call on Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte at Malacanang Palace in Manila, Philippines, Monday, Aug. 7, 2017.

"Members of the Security Council expressed deep concern about the situation in the Rakhine state, acknowledging the initial attack on Myanmar security forces on 25 August they condemned the subsequent violence which has led to over 370,000 people being displaced", Alemu said.

"The evidence is irrefutable - the Myanmar security forces are setting northern Rakhine State ablaze in a targeted campaign to push the Rohingya people out of Myanmar", said Tirana Hassan, Amnesty's crisis response director said in a statement. Her power, however, is hamstrung by a power-sharing arrangement with the country's powerful military.

The Rohingya, described by the United Nations as among the world's most persecuted peoples, have faced heightened fears of attack since dozens were killed in communal violence in 2012. And this is going to, in many ways, I think, define the direction that Burma will take.

Tillerson stated that Suu Kyi has found herself in a hard and complex situation and that Myanmar's democracy is facing a defining moment.

"It is vital for her now to make clear that this is an abomination and that those people will be allowed back" in the country, he added. He reiterated support for civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi who is facing growing pressure to speak out over the military's conduct.
