Worldwide call to halt Rohingya 'genocide'

India has had to modify its position to acknowledge the refugee crisis in Bangladesh after Dhaka indicated that it was not happy with Indian statements during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Myanmar, which only talked of "extremist violence".

The violence in Rakhine and the exodus of refugees is the most pressing problem Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has faced since becoming national leader previous year.

Critics have called for her to be stripped of her Nobel Peace Prize for failing to do more to halt the strife.

The Myanmar administration of Aung San Suu Kyi has been globally condemned for aiding and abetting the oppression of Rohingya by the country's troops and extremist forces.

On the border separating Bangladesh from Myanmar, thousands of Rohingya Muslim families remain in limbo after escaping from the threat of attack.

Guterres repeated his call for "an effective action plan" to address the root causes of the situation, which he said he been left to fester for decades and has now escalated beyond Myanmar's borders, destabilizing the region.

In her first address to the UN General Assembly as national leader in September a year ago, Suu Kyi defended her government's efforts to resolve the crisis over treatment of the Muslim minority.

Referring to reports that aid workers were facing problems of access, Patel said "unacceptable intimidation and restrictions on the movement of humanitarian workers" must be ended. "The sheer number of refugees has overwhelmed pre- existing refugee camps, with new arrivals seeking shelter anywhere they can find space", Dujarric said.

The Myanmar authorities have targeted Rohinyga civilians after an insurgent group attacked police and military posts in the northern Rakhine state.

The United Nations has warned of a looming "worst case scenario" with all of the Muslim minority group trying to leave Buddhist-dominated Myanmar's Rakhine state where a military crackdown was launched on August 25.

Suu Kyi is not Myanmar's president - her official titles are state counselor and foreign minister - but she effectively serves as leader of the Southeast Asian nation though she does not control the military.

The government of Buddhist-majority Myanmar rejects such accusations, saying it is targeting "terrorists".

Egypt underlined the importance of holding an emergency meeting to stem bloodshed and suspend acts of violence in Rakhine State of Myanmar.
