  • At least four killed in M5 crash in south Gloucestershire

Avon and Somerset Police said: "The closure is likely to be in place for a considerable amount of time and we'd ask people to avoid the area".

"The motorway is now closed in both directions between J16 and J14 and emergency services are working at the scene".

Director Simon Ellis of Avon and Somerset Police said the protect and recuperation operation was "careful work" and that various preoccupations stayed set up.

Four people have died and a woman and two children are seriously ill in hospital after a lorry smashed through the central reservation on the M5.

Officers said a lorry travelling southbound crashed through the central reservation and hit at least two vehicles heading the opposite way.

"There were many people with blood on their bodies and then the vehicle that had been forced down into the ditch with the lorry was surrounded by many men who were trying their hardest to get out the people inside... the emergency services were incredible but honestly it was the worst crash I've ever seen".

He said three miles of traffic trapped between the junctions was still being cleared via one lane of the northbound carriageway. One vehicle was said to have been completely destroyed.

Witnesses reported seeing people lying by the side of the road as members of the public helped pull survivors from wrecked cars, with some performing first aid.

"Several people offered us water and one man came out of his auto to give food". While others converse with cops about the misery of what has happened.

A representative stated: "We have 13 assets at the scene including the basic care group and the perilous range reaction group".

South Western Ambulance Service said it was called soon after 14.30 BST.

It included drivers the M4 wanting to join the M5 northbound were not able do as such.
