  • Devastation from Hurricane Irma far more than expected: Trump

A new cellphone video has surfaced showing conditions inside the Hollywood Hills nursing home where residents - including one in the nude - were kept in sweltering heat before eight of them died after Hurricane Irma struck Florida.

In a statement to local media, Jorge Carballo, administrator at The Rehabilitation Center, said "several patients experienced distress and there were [three] fatalities" in the building following the power outage, which affected the transformer that powers the facility's air conditioning system.

Three people died at the facility in Hollywood, Fla., and two others were pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital, Barbara Sharief, the Broward County mayor, said at a news briefing Wednesday morning.

Trump also praised Florida's Republican Gov. Rick Scott, who supported his presidential campaign, and said Scott should run for the Senate when his second gubernatorial term ends in 2019.

State investigators from the Florida Office of Attorney General were also at the scene, city officials said in a statement.

"I can tell you what's happening now", she added, saying the federal Agency for Health Care Administration is looking into all the nation's nursing home and the state of Florida are looking at "over 200" in Florida. That backup power must be able to keep temperatures in a safe range for nursing home residents and whatever provisions are stored there, according to more recent regulations that must be implemented by November 2017.

But it was not until multiple patients began experiencing health emergencies, which promoted the evacuation of the center, that the utility company arrived to make the fix, the nursing home said. As a precautionary measure, police are checking the other 42 nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the city of Hollywood, Sanchez said.

Officials in Hollywood said at least six people died and 115 people were evacuated from Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, located about 20 miles north of Miami.

A representative from the White House said that officials are planning more trips to areas of the country impacted by recent hurricanes.

"I wasn't there, because I swear to God if I was there I can call the police and scream", Veroy told NBC6.

Police were first called to the facility at about 4:30 a.m. but authorities did not arrive until after 6 a.m., officials said.

The governor said he has ordered a probe by state authorities. He told Fox News he isn't sure yet if she's one of the dead. "There are not as many beds and facilities available as there are people with needs".

Trump also said they are "way ahead of schedule" in restoring power back to parts of Florida.

Another assisted care facility for dementia patients in Fort Myers, Florida, went without power for three days after Hurricane Irma as elderly patients suffered in the rising heat.

FEMA officials announced Tuesday 25 percent of homes in the Keys had been totally destroyed while thousands of others faced widespread damage and were still left without power.

President Trump turned into the feeder-in-chief in Florida on Thursday - helping dish out food at a Naples trailer park.

Irma hit the United States about two weeks after Hurricane Harvey plowed into Houston, killing about 60 and causing some $180-billion in damage, mostly from flooding. The widow evacuated her Naples condominium with the help of police the day before the hurricane.
