  • Court upholds lifetime sentence against Morsi over spying for Qatar

Morsi is already serving a 20-year sentence for killing protesters in 2012.

The documents allegedly include information on general and military intelligence, armed forces and state policy secrets which harm the national security.

The court on Saturday dismissed an additional sentence of 15 years handed to Morsi for a different charge in the same espionage case, but upheld the 25-year life sentence. The prosecution also accused the defendants of working for the "terrorist branded Muslim Brotherhood" organisation, Xinhua news agency reported.

Two other defendants also received life and rigorous imprisonment terms in the case.

This is the second time that Morsi got a confirmed sentence.

Egypt has been battling a wave of terrorist attacks, centered mostly in North Sinai since the army-led ouster of the Islamic leader Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

On Oct. 22, 2016, the same appeal court has confirmed a 20-year prison sentence against Morsi on charges of violence and murder in 2012, when clashes erupted outside a presidential palace between his supporters and opponents, which killed up to 10 people.

He came to power after Egypt's long-time president Hosni Mubarak was toppled in an uprising in 2011.

Verdicts are to be issued on November 25 against 13 others on trial in the same case. But his death sentence verdict was overturned.

The court of cassation upheld a life sentence first passed in June 2016 on the charge of leading an illegal group but threw out a 15-year sentence on the charge of having stolen secret documents, his lawyer told AFP.

Yet the case is appealable.

Morsi was immediately arrested after the coup and Sisi has been the president of the country since 2013.
