Louis concert amid protests over police officer's acquittal on murder charge

Stockley claimed it was self-defense, that Smith was reaching for a gun.

Police reported making at least 13 arrests and taking three officers to hospital.

The of the St. Louis Police Officers Association told Fox 2/News 11 he'd been getting reports of police cars damaged and the window of a bus full of police officers being broken out.

St. Louis Circuit Judge Timothy Wilson found 36-year-old Jason Stockley not guilty of first-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Also Friday, a reporter for KTVI in St. Louis reported that a protester taunted him about the media, drawing a crowd.

Stockley, who was a St. Louis police officer in 2011, shot and killed Smith after a high-speed chase that followed a suspected drug deal. Smith was eventually shot in his vehicle five times.

Ten law enforcement officers were injured, and 23 people were arrested as of 6 p.m. on Friday.

After the verdict, more than 500 protesters marched in downtown St. Louis, chanting "No justice, no peace" and "Shut it down".

"We have been informed by police of St Louis that she was not able to provide standard protection for our audience as this should be case for an event of this magnitude", said U2 in a joint press release with organizer of concert, Live Nation.

Mr Stockley, a serving police officer at the time, was recorded during the pursuit saying: "Gonna kill this [expletive], don't you know it". "Like we don't mean nothing, like we're rats, trash, dogs in the streets". She stated, "I believe we offered sufficient evidence that proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Jason Stockley meant to kill Mr. Smith".

The statement continued: "In light of this information, we can not in good conscience risk our fans' safety by proceeding with tonight's concert".

Authorities urged clam during the aftermath as comparisons to the Ferguson protest that gave rise to the Black Lives Matter movement in 2014 were drawn.
