The Trump administration therefore plans to act on its own to restrict the flow of crude oil to North Korea from China, the North's main source of oil. "They should do more to find effective ways to resume dialogue and negotiation", he said.

Friday's missile launch was the 13th ballistic missile test in North Korea this year.

China's Ambassador to the United States had a similiar message after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on September 14 called for more "direct actions" by Beijing and Moscow against North Korea.

"[The US] should refrain from issuing more threats", said Cui Tiankai, the Chinese ambassador to the U.S.

Ambassador Cui Tiankai on Friday told reporters at an embassy event: "Honestly, I think the United States should be doing ... much more than now, so that there's real effective global co-operation on this issue".

Military drills by the United States and its allies, as well as the continuing military maneuvers in the coast near the Korean peninsula, are an open show of hostility and long-dormant threat for North Korea. According to the state-run KCNA news agency, leader Kim Jong-un said: "Our goal is to make the rulers of the USA dare not talk about military option regarding us".

Regarding new UN Security Council sanctions against North Korea that were unanimously adopted Monday, Trump said at the White House on Tuesday: "We think it's just another very small step".

North Korea had lashed out against the sanctions, calling them "illegal" and vowing to retaliate.

While President Donald Trump has said in recent weeks that China should do more to stop North Korea from continuing its military tests, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry joined Cui in urging the U.S.to take responsibility for its current tensions with the Kim regime.

North Korea said on Saturday it aimed to reach an "equilibrium" of military force with the United States after Pyongyang fired a second missile over Japan on Friday. According to the US and South Korean military, the missile was launched from the Pyongyang area.
