  • Fire HD 10: Amazon cuts price and doubles storage of new 10in tablet

With the new and improved Fire HD 10, Amazon's own digital assistant is hands-free on a tablet for the very first time, transforming the firm's latest tablet into a cheaper alternative to the Echo Show (although that's not available in the United Kingdom yet anyway). You can play movies from Amazon Prime. You can order yours on the company's website via the button below.

Anyone who has seen a Fire tablet before will find the user interface familiar and easy to use, but the big addition on the Fire HD 10 is the expansion of Alexa.

Let's talk first about the tablet element.

Like the Fire 7 and Fire HD 8 refreshes before it, Amazon's new Fire HD 10 includes Alexa integration as standard.

That gives the Fire HD 10 a more liberal interface with Alexa, allowing you to speak those commands - "Alexa turn off the lights" - without having to touch the tablet.

The twist with the Fire HD 10 is the introduction of hands-free Alexa, which can be toggled on and off via the notification pane.

Faster performance-Quad-core processor with up to 1.8 GHz and 2GB of RAM-2x the RAM and 30% faster than the previous generation Fire HD 10-delivering quick app launches, smooth videos and games, and great overall performance. The all-new Fire HD 10 is available for pre-order starting today. You've got full control over the tablet via voice command, and if you think creatively, it's nearly like having an even better Echo Show instead of a calm, under-featured tablet. And while it seems like Alexa is suddenly everywhere, it makes flawless sense that Amazon would want to integrate its very popular personal assistant with its very popular cheap tablets. For one thing, you you can use the device to check in on security camera footage from companies like Ring, Arlo, Nest and August (still waiting for that Canary functionality, folks).

Like all Amazon tablets, the Fire HD 10 is powered by Fire OS, Amazon's own proprietary operating system based on Google's Android. Amazon has brought the price down lower than on the previous version of the slate, making it only £149.99 or $149.99 for the 32GB version.

The Fire HD 10 tablet will be available from 11 October.

The Amazon Tap is Amazon's portable Alexa-enabled Bluetooth speaker.
