Germany's big parties suffer small drop in support

Chancellor Angela Merkel is well on course to securing a fourth term as the leader of her country in parliamentary elections September 24.

Merkel's conservative alliance still commands a huge lead over the SPD of her top rival Martin Schulz, which slipped to 23 percent.

The election will nevertheless bring a change to German politics.

A week before German elections, the storied Free Democratic Party looks set to recover from a historic 2013 defeat and return to parliament - where it could make Berlin a much more awkward partner for its European neighbours.

Joining them is likely to be the anti-EU populist and xenophobic Alternative for Germany (AfD), the first party to the right of the CDU to make it into the Bundestag post-1945. Gauland has argued Germany should be proud of its veterans of two world wars. After forming a coalition government, a process that can last a month, the president of Germany, a representative, will appoint the Federal Chancellor, who is normally the leader of the party most voted, and finally the parliamentarians will confirm that nomination by secret ballot.

Athens is grateful to Merkel for helping to craft the EU-Turkey agreement that has kept Greece from being overwhelmed with thousands of additional refugees and migrants, after a huge influx in 2015. Germany needs to engage with Russian Federation on many bilateral and global issues, but its vital Berlin makes clear it expects Moscow to live up to its worldwide human rights commitments.

There are two reasons for this absence. "If re-elected, she'll continue this course of strengthening those relations".

"We're gradually becoming foreigners in our own country", Gauland told an election rally in the Polish border city of Frankfurt an der Oder.

If the parties performed electorally at their current polling levels (the CDU/CSU at 34% and the FDP at 9%) they would still need the cooperation of a third party to gain a majority. Germany shows a budget surplus of $31 billion.

The Christian Democrats want to meet NATO's 2-percent defense spending target. Other parties say they won't include AfD in a new government. This arrangement would likely be led by Martin Schulz. There are seven major parties ranging across the political spectrum.

The Nazis ruled Germany from 1933 to 1945, during which time they killed 6 million Jews in the Holocaust and invaded countries across Europe.

You could be forgiven for thinking that in this election representation is trumping the democracy in Germany's representative democracy.

Many businesses seeking stable leadership and a continuation of the status quo would also welcome a Merkel re-election, but there are growing calls for more investment within the country and attempts to attract outside investors. Brexit looms large, and the politics of a number of eastern members are increasingly hard to reconcile with the purported notion of European democratic values. This time in the direction of more liberal and market-based policy solutions.

In August, the scandalous politician landed in hot water after he slammed the German government's commissioner for integration, Aydan Oezoguz, who is of Turkish origin, and said that she should be "disposed of in Anatolia".

During last week's TV election debate, both candidates declared their intention to formally cancel all European Union accession talks with Ankara. We prefer bikinis" or "New Germans?

Barring that any extraordinary developments take place in the meantime, the bets are that Angela Merkel remains in the "washing machine"-the nickname given to the box-shaped concrete chancellery".

Over the past four years, German conservatives had to be accommodating with their policy positions to reach compromises with their coalition partners in the center left.
