A fifth Game of Thrones prequel has been confirmed to be in the works.

Game of Thrones co-executive producer and writer Bryan Cogman looks to be working with George R.R. Martin himself on another possible prequel to the hit series.

Game of Thrones' Bryan Cogman has been with the show since its debut season and has now been signed up to work on an exciting fifth series for the network, reports Variety.

The writer/producer has penned several pivotal episodes of GoT including Season 7's second episode, "Stormborn," Season 6 episodes "Blood of My Blood" and "The Broken Man" and others.

The prequel news should come as no surprise to "Game of Thrones" fans.

Game of Thrones is based on Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire book series, and is expected to air its eighth and final season in 2018.

While details about any of these projects have not been revealed, George has made one thing clear. This one is being written by the show's experienced writer Bryan Cogman who has been associated with the HBO epic from the very first season. He thinks that two or three could reach the pilot stage with the possibility of one emerging sometime in 2019 or 2020.

He joins Brian Helgeland, Carly Wray, Jane Goldman and Max Borenstein for the top secret projects. In fact, Cogman has written more Game of Thrones episodes than anyone other than showrunners and co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, both of whom will reportedly not be involved in any of the show's prequels.

"We have added a fifth writer to the original four", he wrote at the time.

None of the main cast of the series will be involved in these projects.

"I immediately fell in love with the book from page one, as most people do", Cogman said in a 2011 interview with The Westeros.org.

That being said, there are dozens upon dozens of other stories throughout the history of Westeros that could be used for these "Game of Thrones" series. Those who have kept up with word of the prequels will know that Martin has already ruled out tackling Robert's Rebellion or anything to do with his ongoing Dunk & Egg saga, but that doesn't mean the dragonglass mine is empty just yet.
