  • Ryanair's O'Leary Apologizes For Mass Cancellations

Until now, Ryanair has used a 12-month period beginning April 1, which gave it a competitive advantage in scheduling pilots during the busy summer season because hours accumulated from January to March didn't carry over into the new scheduling year, the IALPA said in a statement.

A source told Reuters that the letter had been approved by pilots at 17 of 85 Ryanair bases, though this could not be independently verified by Reuters.

RYANAIR chief executive Michael O'Leary received a total pay package of almost £2.88 million past year.

During the meeting he said Ryanair is planning to take back one week of their pilots' holidays to prevent any further flight cancellations. Blue flu was the name given to past industrial action by Gardai, where prohibited from striking, they called in sick. There are sufficient pilots to staff flights but not enough to go on standby to deal with unforseen issues and avoid flight delays, O'Leary said.

The airline chief said yesterday that any pilots who engage in industrial action such as "blue flu" can "kiss goodbye" to pay increases.

Mr O'Leary accused some pilots of being "precious about themselves" and "full of their own self importance".

He also said there have been no demands for new contracts. "We have some goodies to discuss with pilots, but if pilots misbehave, that will be the end of discussion on goodies".

"(Piloting a commercial plane) is very highly skilled but I challenge any pilot to explain how it is a hard job or how they are overworked", he added.

A RyanAir pilot said: 'Bases are uniting and joining forces.

But he insisted Ryanair's pilots work under "good terms and conditions" and relations with air crew are good.

"We don't need their agreement".

Earlier this week, it said it expected to process 300,000 reroute or refunds requests by the weekend of September 23/24, meaning 95% of all those affected would have been processed within six days of finding out their flight was cancelled.

"(Pilots) are not going to participate in work to rule.

"I seriously regret these cancellations and upsetting and worrying 80 million of our customers last week", he said.

There are growing reports in media that while the profitability of the airline may largely stay unaffected by this current chaos, the flight cancellations could, however, impact Ryanair's potential acquisition of Italy's carrier Alitalia.
