  • iPhone 8, 8 Plus draw Apple fans at launch despite X holdouts

The iPhone 8 is an unusual product for Apple.

Apple has just refreshed its iPhone lineup.

The 4.7-inch iPhone 8 comes with a 12-megapixel camera and the 5,5-inch 8 Plus with dual cameras, with both featuring Portrait Lighting changes with real-time analysis via machine learning. After two years of everyday use, it's time to replace it.

While the number of people queuing up outside Apple stores have dropped over the years with many opting for online purchases, the weak turnout for the latest iPhone has partly been due to poor reviews.

Three young Sydneysiders who spent 11 days camped outside the Apple store in the CBD have been cheered by staff members as they became the first Aussies to buy the new iPhone.

Many customers in the store were trying to the test the new models instead of committing to buy.

"The new features of the iPhone X are fresh, but not attractive enough for me to hold the feeling that I have to own it whatsoever", said Yang Zheng, a 30-year-old working in the education industry who paid $1,200 for his iPhone 8 Plus (that phone starts at $799 in the US but costs more in China because of a value-added tax).

The teardown also found the expected 2GB of LPDDR4 RAM, which is the same amount as the iPhone 7, though of course overall performance should be dramatically improved by the new A11 Bionic chipset. Its photograph function is pretty good.

Cat Fu, a smartphone dealer in Shenzhen, expects sales prospects of the iPhone 8 to be poor as people see no real improvements from the previous iPhone 7 series and are more likely to hold out for the upcoming iPhone X, which features a larger display and no home button in its front.

With all that having been said, this year is still quite different from years past.

As well as the upcoming iPhone X, Apple said the pre-order and collection options, where customers choose a time that suits them to come in and collect the new phone meant fewer people now chose to queue.

Preorders for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, which also have glass bodies and a faster processor than the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, fell slightly short of the older models because consumers were curious about the iPhone X, said SoftBank President Ken Miyauchi.
