  • Hurricane Maria's devastating strength leaves island powerless

An update from Tonge says the capital of Roseau still has severe flooding and there's heavy damage throughout the city.

There are at least nine communities that no one has any information about because they're cut off and most communications are down in the country.

Hurricane Maria ripped through Dominica as a category four storm late on Monday, damaging hundreds of homes.

Alghabra sympathized with families awaiting word on their loved ones in Dominica and said the government was trying to provide them as much information as possible.

According to the NHC's advisory at 8 a.m. Friday, Maria, which is a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale, is just east of the southern islands of the Bahamas.

Rain is expected to continue over the next two days in the Dominican Republic, which could bring the total rainfall up to 20 inches.

US President Donald Trump said the storm had "totally obliterated" the US territory, and pledged to visit Puerto Rico.

In August 2015, tropical storm Erika battered Dominica and killed 31 people. Maria has maximum sustained winds of 125 miles per hour and is moving northwest at 7 miles per hour. It's centered about 95 miles (150 kilometers) north-northwest of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and is moving northwest at 9 mph (15 kph).

Maria paralyzed rescue and recovery efforts, and wiped out power to the entire island.

There was a tropical storm warning for the Dominican Republic from from Puerto Plata west to the northern border with Haiti and from Cabo Engano west to Andres/Boca Chica.

Other Caribbean islands assess damage The storm completely knocked out Puerto Rico's power grid, leaving the country's 3.5 million residents without electricity, and more than 95 percent of wireless cell sites are down.
