By Friday afternoon, Maria was passing northeast of the Turks and Caicos with winds of 125 miles per hour (205 kph). A hurricane warning remained in effect for those islands as well as the southeastern Bahamas.

Maj. Gen. Derek P. Rydholm, deputy to the chief of the U.S. Air Force Reserve, said at the Pentagon that it was impossible to say when communication and power would be restored.

Israel Molina, 68, found that Maria had ripped away roofing from his Israel Mini Market in San Juan.
