Some users are able to log in, but are unable to post, while others can not log in at all.

Naturally, many people took to Twitter to query what was wrong with Facebook (and express their anguish through gifs).

World's biggest social networking website Facebook is down. This site is showing that over 12,000 people have reported issues with their account today, first beginning at 8:20 A.M. EST. We quickly investigated and started restoring access within about an hour, and we have almost fixed the issue for everyone.

Where can I check to see if Facebook is back up?

Several online outage monitors (here and here) were inundated with reports of the outages.

WPIX-TV also said that according to the website, Instagram had more than 2,000 users indicating they had a problem.

Oddly, Facebook's status page says its platform is "healthy".

Where did the Facebook blackouts happen?

Facebook reportedly confirmed the outages with a statement posted to Facebook, which is not accessible by a large portion of its users.

Just after 11:00am EST, parts of the US, mostly the East and West Coasts, and Europe starting suffering Facebook outages.

This story is developing.
