Google Home Mini: Why Is It Recording Everything?

That's because some sort of a touch control mechanism flaw made the Google Home Mini device in the possession of Android Police founder Artem Russakovskii record every nearby sound without its owner's approval. Russakovskii's pre-release unit, which he picked up from Google's October 4 event for the tech press, has apparently recorded "thousands of times a day" and attempted to respond to random noises. "If you're still having issues, please feel free to contact Google Support at 1-855-971-9121 to get a replacement Google Home Mini". There was no "OK Google" or "Hey Google" voice activation involved, and no touch panel long press. The culprit, it seemed, was the device's touch panel, created to allow his Home Mini to activate Google Assistant without a verbal command; due to a fault, the device constantly experienced "phantom" touch events that turned the assistant on and began recording.

This touch sensor was malfunctioning for some of the first units (those that were handed out to the press at the event), triggering the Google Home Mini to listen for a command at times when there was no command to hear. We are rolling out a software update today that should address the issue. Those new Google devices include the Google Home Mini and Google Home Max. The organization confessed the problem and is furnishing a software update to rectify the issue which surfaces towards the disaster of a touch sensor on top.

AndroidPolice said that they noticed that, at one point, the Google Home Mini started picking up a Spotify stream. "Made By Google" events presumably don't just cover the press event; they also cover the pre-release giveaways that have been occurring at pop-up stores across the U.S. and Canada.

'It was waking up, recording, then sending those recordings to Google. He says the company replied to his initial e-mail within 10 minutes and issued a band-aid patch the day after his report. The device isn't due for launch until 19 October, so the company has a few days to find a permanent solution, or potentially push back its launch date. Good news is that Google was partially able to fix the issue before it panned. Presumably, Google has warehouses full of units that it can test, debug, adjust, and maybe even delay.
