Lola Ogunyemi claims that she has no issue with the body wash ad and that she's actually proud to have been part of it, especially since Dove used a model with dark skin in it.

Blake told CNN that she couldn't believe the ad was real.

Personal care brand Dove recently suffered criticisms after a portion of an ad campaign ran by them on Facebook surfaced, showing a black woman morphing into a white woman.

A model featured in the Dove advertisement that's drawn accusations of colourism this week has responded to the controversy.

Complaints that the ad was tone-deaf and racist began appearing on social media, leading to the commercial being pulled and an apology from the brand.

However, Ogunyemi said she was surprised when she woke up one morning to realise she had "become the unwitting poster child for racist advertising".

And while Ogunyemi said she understands why the screenshots caused backlash, she ultimately feels that the photos were misinterpreted.

Ogunyemi was excited by the prospect of fronting Dove's body wash campaign, seeing it as a chance to represent her "dark-skinned sisters" and promote their value and beauty.

When she filmed it, she thought the concept was great.

"Having the opportunity to represent my dark-skinned sisters in a global beauty brand felt like the ideal way for me to remind the world that we are here, we are handsome, and more importantly, we are valued", wrote Ogunyemi in a Tuesday op-ed for the Guardian. What the screenshot failed to show was that the redheaded white woman removes her shirt and transforms into a third woman, who appears to be of color.

Next, a full 30-second TV commercial was released in the U.S., featuring seven women of different races and ages, answering the question: If your skin were a wash label, what would it say?

"So I'm scrolling through Facebook and this is the * a class="_58cn omniture-processed" href="" data-ft="{"tn":"*N","type":104}" *#dove ad that comes up. ok so what am I looking at", she wrote on Friday. There was even an ad posted to Facebook previous to this which also included an Asian woman.

However, she also said that Dove should have spotted the risk that the sequence of images could be interpreted as racist given that it had run into trouble over similar content in the past.

"I know that the beauty industry has fuelled this opinion with its long history of presenting lighter, mixed-race or white models as the beauty standard".

She also felt the public was justified in their outrage, but also saw that a lot had been left out.

Makeup artist Naomi Blake, also known as Naythemua, said the ad is "tone deaf". The narrative has been written without giving consumers context on which to base an informed opinion, ' she wrote.
