Nissan unleashes the ultimate radio-control auto

Its latest stunt is the flawless cross-over between real life and video games, though - the company hooked up a GT-R with servomotors and robotics to control steering, acceleration, braking and gearshifts, and then made all that run through a PlayStation 4 controller.

Nissan has modified a GT-R into a huge remote-controlled auto and sent it around the Silverstone with the help of professional racer and GT Academy victor Jann Mardenborough. Obviously having a ball, Mardenborough didn't hold back, averaging 122 km/h (76 mph), reaching a top speed of 211 km/h (131 mph) and clocking a lap of 1:17:47. If you have never driven a fast RC auto, you might not know how hard it is to control the vehicle when it is coming towards you, controls are reversed in that instance.

The stunt was put together to mark the release of Gran Turismo Sport, out on October 18 on PS4.

The response from the vehicle when using the controller was far more engaging than I thought it would be.

A dual-shock Sony PlayStation controller, with a range of 1km, can then be used to drive the auto at nearly three times the motorway speed limit. JLB Design has done an incredible job at making everything respond really well. Modifications for the lap included four robotic devices for operating steering, transmission, brakes, and throttle. "We had to ensure the robotics would work properly during fast acceleration and high lateral g-forces, they had to deliver realistic control of the auto at all speeds, and the connection the vehicle and the DualShock4 controller had to be fast and reliable". In other words, Mardenborough has plenty of experience piloting a GT-R with a PlayStation controller, though until now it was always with a virtual version of the auto, instead of the real thing.

The Nissan GT-R/C, as the name suggests, is a full size, remotely controllable Nissan GT-R racecar. The controller itself was completely unmodified connected to a microcomputer with a wireless operation control range of one kilometre.

Insane promotional efforts aside, this GT-R/C will serve some useful objective in 2018 on a tour of primary and secondary schools in the United Kingdom to promote future careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) subjects.
