A second death case from West Nile virus (WNV) has been reported in the Midwest State of Iowa, thus bringing the total number of WNV fatalities to 67 across the USA this year.

The new cases are in Hinds, Rankin, and Sunflower counties. WNV cases have been reported in all of the continental United States.

West Nile virus has been detected in four chickens near Solvang, Santa Barbara County Public Health officials said Monday.

"This time of the year, the risk of West Nile virus infection increases and individuals should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites and eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites", said ODH State Epidemiologist and Bureau Chief of Infectious Diseases Sietske de Fijter. Fortunately, most people infected with WNV do not have symptoms.

The county said West Nile virus is most commonly spread to people by mosquito bites. About one in five people who become infected develop a fever with other symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Rare, severe cases of the virus can cause brain swelling and lead to seizures or a coma, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It's evidence that the spraying, while effective, does not eliminate the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses, they said.
