Apple is said to be speeding up the production process of the folding screens by investing in the construction of a new LG Display manufacturing facility, called E6.
However, Apple and LG's partnership may not be seeing fruit until 2020, giving Samsung quite a large window to go one-up on its rival.
Apple is, however, tight-lipped on this future iPhone plan, and so is LG. It must be really hard for Apple to have to work with its arch-rival in this way, but as it seems, it is out of sound alternatives. The report adds LG Innotek is also working on developing flexible printed circuit board or RFPCB for the foldable iPhones. According to a MacRumors report, only the iPad Pro lineup will feature support for FaceID, and the "regular" iPad models will continue to feature Apple's Touch ID system for fingerprint scanning.
Samsung built the OLED display for the iPhone X, which was one of the most leaked components in the history of the iPhone.
LG recently started its first OLED production for phones at its E5 plant in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, as per a CNN News18 report. Some say that this is due to Apple's fear that Samsung will steal their technology. While iPhone contributes the majority of revenue and profits, Apple Watch is growing in importance, potentially doubling revenue contribution to Apple top-line in the next two years.
Estimates suggest Samsung could earn $4 billion in total from the phone, if sales live up to expectations. However, let's not forget that we've been hearing rumors of foldable phones for quite some time, and there's no sign that one will be ready for consumers any time soon, let alone only three years from now.
