  • Congress leads in Nanded civic polls

The by-poll in Ward no 116 of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been necessitated due to the death of Congress corporator Pramila Patil, who passed away due to a heart attack on April 25.

Congress have taken the lead in Chavan's stronghold.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) the two parties contesting the election in alliance are likely to win a total of 10 seats, the exit polls said.

The Congress today scored a spectacular victory in the Nanded-Waghala municipal corporation elections with the party winning 49 out of 54 seats for which results were declared.

BJP's Jagruti Patil defeated Shiv Sena's Meenakshi Patil in Bhandup. If the Sena withdraws support to the BJP, the Fadnavis government will be in a minorit and will need help from Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party or NCP.The BJP dramatically improved its performance in this year's BMC election from the 31 wards that it had won last time. Himali Kamble of the BJP defeated Nationalist Congress Party's Dhananjay Gaikwad. Elections to the civic body were held on Wednesday. Shiv Sena stood second with 14 seats while BJP managed to bag only two seats.

Congress that is now ruling the civic body is seeking to retain it while the BJP, that has been thumping all other parties in most local body polls is seeking to seize power in Nanded.

The fact that former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Congress leader Ashok Chavan is spearheading his party in the elections shows the importance attached to Nanded municipal corporation. The voter turnout for the civic body polls stood at 60 per cent. While the Congress was fighting to retain the seat, the Shiv Sena and BJP were trying to dethroning it.

NCP, which had won 10 seats in the last elections, has so far not opened its account.
