South Korean and US military officials have been closely monitoring North Korea following a threat by the regime to conduct a new ballistic missile test.

Tensions spiked on the Korean Peninsula in August as North Korea announced a plan to launch ballistic missiles toward the US Pacific territory of Guam. The stolen data, allegedly estimated to be around 235 GB, also includes secret Seoul-Washington war plans that detail procedures on how to handle an all-out war with Pyongyang and "decapitate" Kim Jong-un's leadership. North Korean officials told the South their soldiers shouted warnings, but the tourist didn't respond even after they fired a warning shot. "It was preposterous." South Korea's Unification Ministry has said safety guarantees for South Koreans are among the changes needed before it will consider restarting the tours.

The B-1Bs also conducted exercises with Japan's Air Force in what the United States statement called a "sequenced bilateral mission".

However it is unlikely North Korea would agree to allow the business owners' request to visit their facilities, given the heightened tensions over Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs.

The briefing by his defence secretary James Mattis and top military officer General Joseph Dunford "focussed on a range of options to respond to any form of North Korean aggression or, if necessary, to prevent North Korea from threatening the United States and its allies with nuclear weapons", according to a brief statement from the White House.

South Korea readies a weapon to take down the North's power system in case of a war.

He said in October that "only one thing will work" in relation to North Korea. Businessmen who ran souvenir shops and restaurants in the zone lost their assets to North Korea. North Korea needs time and proof to believe that abandoning its nuclear programme will contribute to its own political and economic advantage.

"I told my own staff October 10 is the Korean Workers Party founding day, that's Tuesday in North Korea, but that's Monday, Columbus Day holiday in the US, so stand by your phones", Yong Suk Lee, deputy assistant director of the CIA's Korea Mission Center, told students and reporters at George Washington University.
