Petrol dealers strike called off

State petrol pump dealers on Wednesday called-off their 24-hour nationwide strike on October 13 after state oil companies rejected their demands and warned them against closure.

It may be noted that Sanjiv Singh, Chairman of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) had said yesterday that the strike call was totally unjustified as the oil firms have accepted all demands and raised dealers commission only a few weeks ago. Balwinder Singh Canth, director of marketing, International Olympic Committee told FPJ, "There are some dealers who have told us that they will not part take in the strike as they feel the reason for strike is unreasonable".

The United Petroleum Front, an umbrella organization of three national-level bodies of petrol dealers - Federation of All India Petroleum Traders, All India Petroleum Dealers Association and Consortium of Indian Petroleum Dealers, in its recent meeting made a decision to the observe the strike after rounds of discussion with the policy makers failed. All their demands have already been considered and addressed.

"OMCs have zero tolerance policy towards customer cheating and it will impact only those dealers who indulge in such malpractices", Balwinder Singh Canth, director (marketing), Indian Oil, said during a media interaction with his counterparts from the other two OMCs.

An official from Hindustan Petroleum said in a statement, "All the three constituents of the United Petroleum Front (UPF) have called off the proposed all-India strike planned for 13th and 27th October 2017". The state can interfere in this matter as oil is an essential commodity. "In case we feel there may be some disruption, we will approach the state governments concerned and seek their intervention to ensure the public is not inconvenienced". Dealers also want the government to bring petrol and diesel under the GST regime.

The union is said to be opposing the amended OMCs marketing discipline guidelines. S Ramesh, director marketing at BPCL, said OMCs fail to understand why dealers are not happy with the new wages implemented for bunker attendants as the entire wage hike of up to 49 per cent has been absorbed by OMCs.
