Secretary of State Rex Tillerson made the decision several weeks ago, and told French President Emmanuel Macron Washington was considering leaving during a meeting with President Donald Trump in late September on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

"This decision was not taken lightly, and reflects USA concerns with mounting arrears at UNESCO, the need for fundamental reform in the organisation, and continuing anti- Israel bias at UNESCO", State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said.

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova stated that United States decision to leave membership was a loss in name of "pluralism" in UN family.

The United States is planning to formally pull out of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) due to the body's anti-Israel bias and in an attempt to save money, the American Foreign Policy news site reported late Wednesday night.

Paris-based UNESCO, which began work in 1946, is known for designating World Heritage sites such as the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria and the Grand Canyon National Park.

The UN Education Science and culture organization had strained its relations with United States, following UNESCO's acceptance of Palestine as a full member. The United States lost its vote in the organization in 2013 because it ended its financial contributions.
