Voting is wrapping up in Liberia, where a runoff election already is expected because of the high number of presidential candidates.

The Liberty Party, whose candidate Charles Brumskine was considered a front-runner to take over from Nobel Peace Prize victor and outgoing leader, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, said it would consider taking legal action if the National Elections Commission (NEC) did not act on its demands. In 2011, he also ran for the vice-president role on the losing ticket.

For many weeks leading up to the 2017 polls, many analysts adjudged Weah the clear favourite to win the polls, while the ex-footballer on one occasion also declared that he would only accept the results if he emerged victorious.

"As a longstanding friend, the United States applauds the people of Liberia for exercising their democratic right to vote in the historic presidential and legislative elections", said a statement from US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert. He played for Monaco, PSG, Olympic (Marseille), Chelsea, Manchester City and Milan.

According to an Executive Mansion release, President Sirleaf, early on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 joined the queue at precisely 8:20a.m.in Fefeh Town, Bomi County to cast her vote.

The Liberty Party alleged the presidential election was fraught with fraud and irregularities and called on the National Elections Commission (NEC) to suspend its planned announcement of provisional results until it formally presents its findings to the electoral body. It is yet to be seen what significant effect such incidents had on the general conduct of the election.
