FIFA bans Pakistan Football Federation over 'undue 3rd-party interference'

  • FIFA says suspends Pakistan Football Federation

In a statement sent to Reuters, Shahid Khokhar, an ally of Hayat, lay the blame for PFF's trouble at the feet of Muhammad Safdar, senior PML-N lawmaker and the son-in-law of recently ousted Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The matter has been in the courts in recent years and judges have appointed an administrator to temporarily oversee the federation, which has been dogged by incompetence allegations and claims of corruption.

"FIFA has chose to suspend the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) with immediate effect in accordance with the decision of the Bureau of the FIFA Council dated 10 October 2017 on account of undue third-party interference", said a statement from FIFA.

The suspension imposed by the Bureau of the FIFA Council means no Pakistani teams can take part in worldwide competitions - though none have for more than three seasons.

Messi, who despite winning all club accolades has yet to win a trophy with Argentina, said Tuesday night (Wednesday morning in Pakistan) was his most illustrious day in national colours.

"If we want to play football, we would have to follow FIFA's laws". The Federation had violated FIFA norms by giving the control of the offices and accounts to a national High Court-appointed administration.

It is worth mentioning that after the controversial elections in 2015 and the legal battle between two groups of PFF, FIFA had given two years' mandate to Faisal Saleh Hayat to bring reforms in PFF, which ended in September 2017.

This comes as a big low for the Pakistan national football team and all its allies as they will now be disallowed from participating in all the worldwide events that will be organised by the global football governing body and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

First of all, the PFF's teams, both national and affiliated, face a ban from playing in worldwide competitions.

The PFF will also be barred from all contact with other member associations for the duration of the ban.

In addition, members and officials from the Pakistani organisation won't have access to development grants or training courses issued by FIFA and Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

"Usually FIFA would appoint a normalization committee, but that's not the case here".
