  • Capt Safdar moves IHC to putt off indictment in graft reference

Proclamations against Hussain and Hasan Nawaz, sons of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, have been pasted on the notice board of the accountability court here on Thursday.

A Pakistani court has delayed the indictment of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter and son-in-law on corruption charges following clashes between his supporters and police.

A scuffle erupted when security personnel barred lawyers and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders from entering the court after which the judges along with Justice Mohammad Bashir expressed resentment and left the court without hearing.

Maryam Nawaz talking to media while leaving the court due to adjournment of the case also lamented over the incident and said that the interior ministry should take notice of the brawl.

The accountability court is trying the brothers along with their father Nawaz Sharif, sister Maryam and brother-in-law Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar, in corruption references filed against them by the country's top graft buster on the Supreme Court's instructions.

The hearing was postponed till October 19 without indicting Maryam Nawaz and captain retd.

As a result of the ruckus, Judge Bashir chose to end court proceedings for the day and asked both defendants to leave the courtroom and return for the hearing on October 19.

The court had also made a decision to conduct separate trial of former PM's sons, Hassan and Hussain Nawaz.

"Those who want to appear by free will are arrested from airport, but we are not afraid of it", she said. His legal team nominated Zafir Khan as the "pleader" - the person who will stand for Sharif in court during his indictment.

Later, an advocate, Naeem Gujar, filed an application to the judge for an inquiry into the incident.

The references against the Sharif family pertain to the Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metals Establishment, their London properties and over dozen offshore companies owned by the family.

Sharif had failed to appear on Monday before the court as he was in London with Kulsoom.

NAB's Rawalpindi branch prepared two references regarding the Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metals Establishment, and the almost dozen companies owned by the Sharif family.
