Latics, who are now 19th in the League One table, have been in search of a new manager since John Sheridan left in September.

Former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes has been interviewed for the vacant manager's job at League One Oldham Athletic.

Scholes is a life-long Oldham fan and a regular visitor to Boundary Park but has no managerial experience apart from a brief stint as part of Ryan Giggs' backroom staff following David Moyes' dismissal as Manchester United manager.

Oldham have been without a coach since September, following John Sheridan's departure, with the former boss leaving them rooted to the bottom of the league table.

During a glittering playing career Scholes hoisted 11 Premier League titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups, along with a brace of Champions League triumphs. The club will decide whether to appoint him or Scholes in the next couple of days. "I just did not feel this was the right time".

The club refused to comment on whether Scholes, 42, has been spoken to about the job, but BBC Radio Manchester reports talks have taken place.

At the time of writing Oldham are 19th in the third-tier and face Blackburn on Saturday looking to record their fourth win on the spin for the first time since August 2008 (in all competitions).

Another ex-United player, Richie Wellens, is now caretaker manager.
