  • Pranab Mukherjee was more qualified to become PM, had reasons to be upset, says Manmohan Singh

The third volume of former President Pranab Mukherjee's autobiography titled "The Coalition Years - 1996-2012" will be released on Friday in the presence of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and leaders of non-BJP parties.

Terming the 10 years of UPA rule under Congress as "successful", former President Pranab Mukherjee said on Friday that his latest autobiography was an account of how an individual saw the political drama unfolding and tried to steer clear of any personal details. "But he also knows that I had no choice in the matter", Dr. Singh remarked, evoking laughter.

Mukherjee said when he declined to join the government headed by Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi asked him to be a part of it as he would be "vital to its functioning and also be of support of Singh". Singh said when Congress President Sonia Gandhi chose him to be the Prime Minister in 2014, Pranab Mukherjee was the most distinguished colleague he had.

Speaking at the book launch of the former president he called Pranab Mukherjee the "one of the greatest politicians living in our country". "Pranab ji was most qualified and had every reason to believe that he would be Prime Minister". The widow of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who belonged to the Nehru-Gandhi family, was invited by Congress leaders to take over the reins of the party after her husband's assassination in 1991, but she vehemently refused to lead it. "We ran the government as cohesive team of which Pranab Mukherjee was the most imp member", Manmohan added. Mr Mukherjee praised Dr Singh for successfully running a coalition government.

Akhilesh Yadav, in his brief speech, said Mukherjee's book would come in handy for young politicians like him when elections are due just like good notes ahead of exams. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was present at the launch too.
