Chennai: The week-long stand off between the film industry bodies and the government over entertainment tax ended today with the State cutting tax to eight per cent from ten and regulating prices of tickets to cinema halls.

With the new development, now the approximate ticket price at a multiplex theatre would be around Rs 200 (including Goods and Services Tax and 8 percent entertainment tax) and additional Rs 30 for internet booking charges.

The Tamil Nadu government has chose to reduce the local entertainment tax by two per cent to eight per cent after talks with the movie industry, a Tamil Film Producers Council official said on Friday.

The filmmakers demanded the local body tax be completely abolished. With the new ticket prices coming into effect, movies that are supposed to release in October are now cleared to hit screens.

Producers' body in the state had been protesting against the imposition of the said tax.

Hopefully, now that the conflict has been resolved, the two parties can peace and the theatrical work can begin, so that the movies can be released at least by Diwali so that people can enjoy their day by watching movies and don't have to pay the price for this feud.

"All stakeholders, including theater owners, will have to follow the new ticket regulations and I'm very confident", said Vishal.

However, 20 per cent tax will continue to be levied on non-Tamil language films and a request has been made to reconsider and cut it down, he said and added, "that request is under consideration (of the government)". Movie ticket prices were capped at Rs 120 earlier.
