Unleash your creativity to enter Niantic's Pokémon Go AR photo contest

  • Russian-linked campaign used Pokemon Go to meddle in election

At one point, the Tumblr page for Don't Shoot Us was advertising a contest encouraging Pokemon Go players to hunt for Pokemon at sites where police brutality had occurred and name the Pokemon they caught after the victims. The investigation found the Kremlin-linked troll farm operated a Facebook page for a group called "Don't Shoot Us" that purported to be part of the Black Lives Matter movement. Similar activities were uncovered on YouTube, and now clearly Tumblr.

Congress and a special investigator are looking into Russian activity during the USA election, and how Russians used the internet to wage perhaps the most successful disinformation campaign in history. The contest featured a Pokemon named "Eric Garner" as an example. We're asking, because Niantic is holding an in-app augmented reality photography contest for all players where Pokémon Go has been officially released.

CNN couldn't find anything that indicated anybody ever actually participated in the contest, or that any prizes were rewarded.

"It is important to note that Pokémon GO, as a platform, was not and can not be used to share information between users in the app so our platform was in no way being used". This led to the discovery that the same groups also spent tens of thousands of dollars on ads on Google and YouTube, and maintained some 200 accounts on Twitter. Niantic's last big event, the Pokémon Go Fest, unfortunately turned out to be a huge mess. This "contest" required people to take screen shots from their phone and share over other social networks, not within our game. Still, it's clear that the IRA was aware of the popularity of the app (especially in July 2016, the same month it launched) and was willing to make use of any tools in its arsenal to promote unrest among the American people.
