A three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court today referred the case relating to entry of women in Sabarimala temple to a Constitution Bench. I am sure the judgement will also be very positive and landmark."Another women right activist Saswati Ghosh also pinned her faith on the apex court's decision."I hope it will allow women to enter the temple otherwise we can not say it is secular country , As Reported By Siyasat".

The court is hearing a plea challenging practice of banning entry of such women in the temple.

The Supreme Court had in July 2016 indicated that it may refer the question - whether the constitutional right to equality of a woman could be raised to "interfere" with the religious beliefs and customs denying entry to women in Sabarimala temple - to its constitution bench.

Many historians trace the roots of the Sabarimala Temple - dedicated to Dharma Shastha and situated in a heavily forested area - to a Buddhist monastery that was located in the hilly area. The UDF Government has taken the view that since time immemorial it is followed that the women of ages between 10 and 50 were restricted to enter the historic Sabarimala temple. If so, should their privilege to manage their religious affairs yield to the fundamental right of women to practice religion freely. "Unless you have a constitutional right, you can not prohibit entry", the court had said.

Another women's rights activist is also hoping that the SC rules in the favour of the women as India is a secular country.

The case of entry of women of menstruating age to the Sabarimala shrine has seen a prolonged legal journey of over a decade.

Women's rights activists have high hopes from the apex court.

"Since last couple of months, we have been seeing that the Supreme Court is bringing out several progressive and landmark judgments". It said the constitution bench will also deal with the question whether this practice amounted to discrimination against the women. "I am sure the judgement will also be very positive and landmark". "The restriction will be removed hopefully", said Saswati Ghosh.
