Huawei unveils the faster and smarter Mate 10 smartphone

  • Huawei Mate 10 is the powerful mobile office you've been waiting for

The Mate 10 Pro also packs a powerful Mobile Device Management platform that supports Google's zero-touch provision for improved enterprise security, making the device ideal for both work and personal use.

The Mate 10 has followed the iPhone, HTC U11 and Pixel 2 by ditching the headphone port which Huawei claims has given then more room for the bigger battery.

The Mate 10 also features a curved rear glass case which has been created to sit more comfortably in the palm of its owners. At a recent hands-on event, we were able to get some time with a handset that's looking very promising indeed.

We don't know any details about the price of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro yet, but we can safely assume it'll be around the same cost as the Mate 9 Pro was past year.

The face of the phone is dominated by a large 5.9in display, framed by a couple of extremely thin bezels at the top and bottom and even thinner ones down the left and right.

However that should be available regardless of which you choose, and both the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro will be available in Australia, with the Mate 10 arriving on Vodafone from November 15 for $899 outright, while the Mate 10 Pro sees release on December 4 on Optus for $1099 outright.

Flip it over, and more changes are afoot. Gone is the all matte aluminum unibody, replaced with what Huawei calls "multi-axis curved glass".

In plain English this is an aluminium rear with a sheet of superheated, scratch-resistant "6H"-rated glass on the top, which wrap attractively around the sides of the phone's body".

It's not all positive though.

Apparently, that last one is a biggie, because its the most notable way Huawei has attempted to smarten up its phone. This effect is slightly more pronounced on the Mate 10 Pro, where the screen stretches nearly to the very top and bottom of the front panel. Neither are exactly deal breakers but both are hugely disappointing omissions.

But where the Mate 10 Pro and Mate 10 will look to stand out is in their AI capabilities, as the Kirin 970 is the world's first smartphone with an integrated neural-network processor unit, or NPU.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro features a 6-inch display UHD FullView display, but unlike the standard model, does not feature a home button.

The Huawei Mate series is similar to Samsung's Note range in that it offers a wider stance than other flagships like the Huawei P10 or Samsung Galaxy S8. While these translations are done with the Microsoft Translator app, Huawei mentioned that the app works in tandem with the Kirin 970's NPU, which should make it work faster on Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro.

Huawei is putting a big focus on its new Neural Processing Unit feature that sits separately to the CPU and GPU on the chip.

The Pro will have 6GB RAM + 128GB of memory while the Mate 10 will have 4GB RAM and 64GB memory. If that's correct, this should be a phone that can fight with the best of them. It maintains a classic 16:9 screen, but this time its sharper thanks to its QHD resolution – 1,440 x 2,560px.

In the Pro version that strip, situated just above the fingerprint sensor and combined with the nearly bezel-less screen, gives the phone a unique flavour, putting it on par with the new Note 8 or the LG V30. The tangible benefits of this, according to the company, are improved battery life and camera. Brightness levels are seriously impressive too, with 730 Nits beamed at your retinas at maximum levels.

The end result is a camera that's a solid performer from what we've seen so far, producing detail-rich images even in the darkest of shooting conditions.

Huawei claims the addition of an NPU into the Kirin 970 increases device performance by 25 times and efficiency by 50 times.

Dual cameras are on the back of the phone. The front-facing shooter, on the other hand, is an 8MP camera.

It's certainly very noticeable, but we don't think it's the most aesthetically-pleasing design move. Much like the Mate 10 Pro, the Mate 10 also features Easy Projection - a dock-less desktop experience.
