  • Samsung Connect Tag leverages IoT tech for more accurate tracking

Based on the Tizen operating system, the Samsung Connect Tag can be clipped to a range of objects and, using a combination of NB-IoT, Cat.M1, GPS and GLONASS, it will report the location of whatever it is attached to.

The Samsung Connect Tag is the first consumer mobile product to use Narrowband technology, a specially designed cellular communication standard for small data utilization, low power consumption and the ability to securely connect to the internet for optimal location services.

The Connect Tag measures 4.21 centimeters in width and 1.19 centimeters in thickness and is IP68 rated for water and dust resistance.

The device is meant to be connected to a bunch of keys, a dog's collar, or a child's backpack so you can keep an eye on their location at all times.

In addition to providing location info, the Connect Tag is also tied to Samsung's SmartThings ecosystem, meaning the device can do all sorts of things when it enters a predefined zone. Bear in mind that Connect Tag will only work with devices that run Android Marshmallow (6.0) or above. For example, the tag can trigger lights to turn on when a user enters the room or send notifications when a child enters school grounds. It has an on-demand feature by which you can request any Connect Tag's location when desired, by pressing a button on the smartphone. The battery can last for up to seven days on a single charge, minimizing the need to constantly swap out or plug in the device. Additionally, periodic location notifications will show a trace of the loved ones location record.

Tracking your pets, your valuables and even your loved ones is about to become simpler than ever with Samsung's new Connect Tag.

We don't have a price yet, but the Samsung Connect Tag will go on sale in Korea first before expanding to other countries "in the coming months".
