Aside from mince pies, £69 million of chocolate confectionery boxes have been bought in the last four weeks - a near threefold increase on sales in August. A 29 per cent rise in online sales, particularly in London and the South, bolstered the grocer's sales growth, despite it seeing a 0.1 per cent drop in market share to 10.3 per cent.

At Morrisons, sales rose 2.8 percent, while the company's market share dipped 0.1 percentage points to 10.3 percent. This marks the 17th period of growth in a row for Britain's grocers.

Meanwhile, Christmas has already started in the supermarket aisles.

Kantar Worldpanel announced in a statement today that that overall supermarket sales had increased 3.1 percent in value for the 12 weeks to October 8.

The Big 4 all enjoyed rising sales during the period, yet their market share continues to be chipped away by the discounters.

The combined market share of the two German retailers grew to 12% in the 12 weeks to October 8, up from 10.8% the prior year, the survey showed. Lidl remains Britain's fastest growing supermarket, up by 16 per cent to account for 5.2 per cent of total supermarket spend, while Aldi grew by 13.4 per cent to 6.8 per cent.

Waitrose sales were up 2.3% although its market share fell to 5.3%. (WMT), saw its market share fall to 15.4%, from 15.6% for the comparable 12 weeks, with sales 1.8% higher at GBP3.93 billion. Wm. Like-for-like grocery inflation remains at 3.2% but consumers could be welcoming a slowdown in price rises in the new year, with the rate projected to fall below 2% in the first quarter of 2018.

Ocado continued to win a share of the online grocery market, which now includes around 18 per cent of the United Kingdom population.

Nielsen, which also released supermarket sales figures this morning, reported that inflation was at its highest point in almost four years.
