Earlier this week the first trailer for X-Men horror, New Mutants landed, providing a number of jump scares.

Boone sat down for an interview with IGN after the trailer dropped, and while he couldn't reveal too much, he did clear up a few things, starting with the future of the franchise. Even if, as usual, we would like to see them focus more of their efforts on a single film to make it a real success, rather than get involved directly in a trilogy.

Boone talked to IGN about how the idea for The New Mutants was conceived, explaining that the majority of the inspiration for the movie came from comics by Bill Sienkiewicz and Chris Claremont, "so it's very much when New Mutants became dark and surreal and more horror driven". The New Mutants will be in theatres April 13, 2018.

"These are all going to be horror movies, and they're all be their own distinct kind of horror movies", Boone said.

When asked how his X-Men horror ties in to other films in the universe, Boone was remaining tight-lipped.

The folks behind New Mutants have very clearly framed it as a horror movie, but it is a specific type of horror movie. The next will be a completely different kind. Boone refers to the first New Mutants movie, set in an asylum, as a "rubber reality" supernatural horror film, implying a certain mind-expanding psychological nature that one might compare to the likes of The Shining or perhaps Shutter Island, with the "group of teens" mechanic as seen in Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.

Boone continued, "Our take was to examine the horror genre through comic book movies and make each one its own distinct sort of horror film. It is connected to and a part of the X-Men universe, and will continue to be a part of the X-Men universe and will be a part of that as it opens up in the next movies and all that".

We also see a young Illyana Rasputin holding a doll that looks an bad lot like the dragon Lockheed, who belongs to Kitty Pryde in the comics. He hopes his first foray into comic book movies will also pave the way for more horror-related comic properties given that directors such as James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), David F. Sandberg (Shazam!), and James Wan (Aquaman) all cut their teeth in the horror genre before transitioning to superhero movies. I will say we're going to introduce new characters in the next movie as well.
