An Army jawan was thrashed by a mob in north Kashmir's border town of Kupwara on Tuesday before he was rescued by the police after rumours that he was a braid chopper.

The locals alleged that a Territorial Army man barged into the residence of Ghulam Nabi Pir in the village early this morning and cut the braid of his daughter.

Hussain said hair of the woman has been cut and police would be recording her statement. After checking his ID card, it was found that the alleged braid chopper is a Territorial Army jawan.

Protests erupted at Narparistan Fathekadal in old city over an overnight braid chopping incident.

Last week, six men were, however, arrested in downtown Srinagar's Batamaloo locality for rumour mongering and instigating the public to pelt stones on security personnel to protest the braid chopping incidents. The forces' personnel lobbed teargas shells, while protesters pelted stones on them.

Reports said that all the shops and business establishments remained shut while transport also remained off the roads.

A soldier of the Indian Army was assaulted by a mob in Jammu and Kashmir on the suspicion of being a braid chopper.

Two women of a family, including a young girl, were allegedly targeted by braid choppers in the Narparistan area of Fatehkadal, leading to protests by the residents.

It is to mention here that over 350 incidents of braid chopping have occurred in the occupied territory during last one month but not a single culprit has been arrested so far. They shouted slogans against the braid cutting and displayed the chopped braid to media men.

Over 100 braid chopping incidents have been reported from the Valley so far. "FIR has been registered in this regard at Kralgund police station against the accused and the investigation has been taken up", he added.

There have been many incidents when people caught and beat suspected braid choppers, who later turned out to be innocent.

The incident, according to reports, took place around 8 pm when the lady went to washroom outside their house.
