Macy's will, like past year, open stores on Thanksgiving Day at 5 p.m., the department store confirmed on Monday.

Many have expressed their dismay will stores opening doors on Thanksgiving Day, but Macy's is clearly reluctant to hold off until Black Friday.

Consumer sentiment is increasingly moving against retail stores opening on Thanksgiving Day, but thanks to the prevalence of e-commerce, shoppers can browse and buy from most if not all popular holiday retail destinations online. Some stores will close overnight and reopen Friday, others will remain open until 10 p.m. That's the same time Macy's opened on Thanksgiving Day previous year. Prior to that year, the company was opening an hour later for the sales event at 6:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving.

It is the first major retailer to announce its Black Friday hours for 2017. Now, we can expect other competitors to follow suit. Some stores that closed past year, but have not announced their intentions for this Thanksgiving include Barnes & Noble, Target, REI, and Talbots. The event offers customers deep discounts on items to push sales. The list of more than 50 stores includes department stores such as Neiman Marcus, Nordstorm and Von Maur which has the tradition of not opening on Thanksgiving Day.

Black Friday will take place on November 24 this year.
