Militants launched two separate attacks on Afghan security installations killing dozens of soldiers Thursday, the latest in a series of devastating assaults this week that left more than 120 people dead and underscored spiralling insecurity.

Afghanistan's Defense ministry said Taliban militants killed at least 43 Afghan troops when they stormed the military base in southern Afghanistan, Reuters reported.

Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, a spokesman for the militant group, said the attack began with a suicide vehicle bomb followed by an assault that overran the base.

The Taliban claimed responsibility, saying it had killed 60 people.

The group, last year, conducted one of the deadliest bomb attacks in a public park that killed 70 people, many of them Christians, in the eastern city of Lahore.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that "We strongly condemn the barbaric attack at the Afghan National Army base in Kandahar province.

They are used by the enemy and they are shown the routes to attack the outposts", a former military officer Asadullah Walwalji said. He said in a statement sent to the media that 60 soldiers had been killed at the ANA base in Maiwand.

The terrorist attack at the military base follows a news regarding killing of Umar Khalid Khorasani, who is said to Jamaat-ul-Ahrar chief and the mastermind of Army Public School massacre, in the United States drone strikes in Afghanistan, Afghanistan's Paktia province on Tuesday. Scores were also wounded, both policemen and civilians.
